Accessing the online ebook




This instruction is for my Language Arts classes should you need to access our ebook online. 

1. Go to Vportal
2. Choose Digital Resources
3. Choose Houghton Mifflin Harcourt.
4. Choose 8th Grade from the drop down menu.
5. Choose Student ebook.
6. If you have the page number, click in the black line at the top, input the page number, then press enter/return.

Answer these questions for bellwork in your notebook: What is a PSA? What makes a good PSA effective?


Classwork:
Using their own technology, students will use Nearpod to complete lesson activities on analyzing diverse media. 

Nearpod is accessed through Vportal or via a web browser using the URL: www.nearpod.com.

To join a lesson, use the correct code for your class period (codes are not case sensitive). Put both your first and last name in the name box. Put your class period in the Other box. 

After answering long answer questions, press the submit button before going onto the next slide, or your work will be lost.

Research:

Students will work on Learning.com on lessons about sharing safely online and effective search strategies.

2. Students complete a plot diagram graphic organizer to help them identify and analyze the theme of Marigolds.
3. Students completed the WALTeR character activity for either Lizabeth or Miss Lottie to help them with their theme analysis.

How do you feel about Pittman's testimony, bottom of page 3, that he turned the lifeboat around and pulled in the oars? Do you think he was right or wrong to do so?

1. Re-read the article.

2. Using the RACE strategy, answer Discussion Question 3 on page 7. You may write on the back of the page if you need space.

Classwork:  

1. Students are to answer the following. Text evidence from Teens Need Jobs and Teens at Work must be included. This will be counted as a formative.

In your notebooks, answer the following: 

In your first paragraph, briefly summarize the arguments made in each of the Teen articles, making sure to include the main claim of each and support. 

In your second paragraph using the RACE strategy, tell which article you think presents the stronger argument and explain your opinion.  

Be prepared to discuss your answer!

If you did not finish the pretest yesterday, finish that first.

You will be going back through the test, but this time the system will give you a tutorial, so you need to read and follow those instructions.

2. If you did not pass (minimum of 60) the vocabulary test, study your vocabulary words! Makeup will be Thursday, Sept. 6th.
